May 2008 Where Do My Insurance Dollars Go?

We pay the premiums religiously each month and seldom think about where those dollars go until we need them. State and federal laws keep most of that money in a 'pool' of funds, liquid at a moment's notice when needed to pay out on a claim. Knowing the money will be there for us when we need it takes the edge off parting with those dollars, so here's an inside look at where they might be applied when the need arises…

April 2008 Winning the Insurance Lottery

Just when you're certain nothing is going your way and the world has turned against you, the skies have a way of opening up to expose that legendary silver lining. Stories with terrible endings always come across as more entertaining and are often exaggerated well beyond the truth to make a better tale. I hear a lot of them in this business and most have important elements missing for the sake of creating a better villain or passing off bad decisions onto a faceless company. There are plenty of stories, however, with consoling aspects or redeeming qualities that come out of bad situations that seldom get told with the same gusto. Maybe it's time we heard a few…

March 2008 What You Need to Know About Riding in Mexico

Just when you think you know the rules of the game, someone changes them and puts your travel plans in a tizzy. After all the false starts, delays, and confusion, the final phases of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) kicked in on January 31. Air travel was first (implemented back in January of 2007); and this past January, the Land and Sea portion kicked in. All U.S. and Canadian citizens will now need to present either a WHTI-compliant document or a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license) plus proof of citizenship (such as a birth certificate) to get back into the U.S. after traveling to Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. The very last phase of this Initiative will require a passport, but the exact date for that requirement has been delayed due to the overwhelming demand for applications. If you already have a passport, so much the better…

February 2008 13 Things You Need to Know About Insurance

February's mail pile is always a bit more entertaining than usual, with valentines peppering the regular office mail, filled with photos of well-loved bikes. Scattered amongst the red envelopes are an enormous amount of interesting queries that Friction Zone readers might find valuable…

January 2008 Motorcycle Insurance is not Medical Insurance

Throughout our adult life we are constantly amazed by the truth behind the stories we learned as kids and promptly dismissed as we replaced those stories with our own adventures. A closer look at a popular nursery rhyme character portrayed as an anthropomorphic egg reveals that he never was an egg in the original story. 'Humpty-dumpty' was 18th Century slang for a short clumsy person, but as a clumsy person falling off a wall would not be irreparably damaged, an egg would. So the riddle was changed to an egg which couldn't be put back together after it nose-dived off the wall. It's not easy being oval…

December 2007 Season of the Grinch

Dr. Seuss completed How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 1957. Written in rhymed verse with his signature quirky illustrations, it has become a seasonal classic. The Grinch has since become a cultural icon and is often referenced by popular media in instances where a holiday display is ruined by vandals or holiday burglaries are committed. With our focus on festivities this month, it makes sense to take a minute to make sure the safety net is in place should we happen to encounter a situation that threatens to suck the holiday cheer out of us when we find our bikes in a less-than-perfect condition. No one wants to get grinched…
