September 2010 Teaching

Teaching forces you to really think about what you are doing and why you are doing it. When a student asks a question, you can't just say, "Because I said so." If you don't have a good grasp of the theory behind what you're teaching, you will soon lose the respect of the students…

August 2010 Become A Newbie Again

YThere I was, riding along the twisties at 40 mph and loving every minute of it. The weather was perfect, the traffic was clear, and the bike was running as smooth as silk. It was one of those days—I just couldn't stop smiling. On the straight-aways I had to hunker down to get out of the wind and crank the throttle open to get up to speed, but that did not lower my enjoyment level. When the next set of curves came up, I would just sit up, back off the throttle a bit, and merely think about leaning to get the bike into the curve. I was having a blast, having as much fun on this little carbureted 250 dualsport as I have had on my big old fuel-injected 1300. More fun, perhaps, because something was missing…

July 2010 Getting Out of the Zone

There we were, my riding buddy Pat and I, still fairly new to duaslporting, on a dirt road that was completely unfamiliar to both of us. We had been riding the same dirt roads together for a few months, just trying to get comfortable with slipping and sliding, trying to push ourselves a little beyond our comfort zone each ride. This new road in Joshua Tree National Park had us way beyond our comfort zone, so we were certainly nervous but anxious to give it a try…

June 2010 The Learning Never Ends

Do you remember getting started in motorcycling? I remember taking a motorcycle safety class, but I don't remember how I found out about it. We're talking almost 30 years ago—long before the internet was around—but somehow I found a class and enrolled. About all I can recall about the class itself is that I tipped over once during the exercises and I kept trying to cover the brake. Other than that, I guess I made it through the class okay…

May 2010 Are You Having Fun?

I am pretty sure I don't have to remind you of this, but motorcycling is supposed to be fun. Of course, fun is defined differently for each rider. Some riders like to push themselves and their bikes to their limits while others just want to cruise around town. As they say, different strokes for different folks, but only you know whether or not you are having fun…

April 2010 So Many Roads

Do I really care that, according to an article on Time.com, there is a group of riders in south Florida who think that a great rider is one who can outrun the police? No, not really. There's nothing I can do to change their beliefs, and they are neither the first nor the last riders who are going to hold that belief. Naturally, I don't have those same beliefs, and I don't think that most riders feel that way either—at least, not the ones to whom I have spoken. So while I could sit around wishing they felt differently, the reality is that they don't. And if there's one thing I know, it's that arguing with reality is a losing proposition…
