I know someone who used to drive his car over 4,000 miles a month delivering pharmaceuticals. How much fun could that not have been? He considered this high mileage to be some sort of badge of honor, but I wouldn't want to do it. I once thought about becoming a motorcycle messenger, but decided I just didn't want to accumulate the miles in that manner. Boy am I glad I never went that route! Of course, there's a big difference between quality and quantity when talking about mileage, and 4,000 miles a month lacks quality. Or does it?
This winter weather is really putting a damper on my riding. Heavy, wet snow is falling pretty thickly right now in the southern California mountains, and between today and tomorrow the snow is supposed to total around six inches. Definitely no street riding in the near future for me, and I am not sure I want to take my dualsport out and try to get anywhere. I have a hard enough time getting through mud! It looks like I am going to have to find another way to get my motorcycling fix
It's the end of another calendar year, time to look back and see all of the things I was going to do that I didn't. I ask myself, Remember that long motorcycle trip you had planned? Didn't happen. How about that idea to tour the California missions, western national parks, or take part in an endurance ride? None of them ever came to fruition. What about the promise to get out and ride as much as you could? Well, I did ride as much as I could, but it wasn't as much as I wanted to. I let other things get in the way that took up a lot of my time. How about buying that pizza (in Idyllwild, where we are based) for the subscriber who has been with Friction Zone the longest? Now that's something I accomplished this year, and the lunch affected me differently than I had anticipated
Do you have any riding friends who make fun of you because you pack so much stuff 'just in case?' I do too (and I don't think I pack that much compared to some other friends), but this stuff came in handysort ofwhen I was riding my dualsport in Glacier National Park in September. And my gear helped one of my friends who makes fun of me for carrying it
I called them the Frito Lay Club because of the patches on their jackets, but they were really just four guys from Arkansas who work for Frito Lay, making their yearly motorcycle trip out west. Last year they went to Yellowstone; this year they were visiting Glacier National Park, happy to get out of the oppressive heat and humidity of the midwest and into the coolness of Montana. I was glad to be in Montana too. In fact, I'm still in Montana as I write this
When is the last time you got into a situation on your bike that made you realize you didn't know what you were doing? Or if that hasn't happened to you (yet), do you think you know what to do when a car dives into your lane to avoid something in its lane? There are all kinds of situations that have the potential to arise during a ride and there are a few different ways to respond. Do you have what it takes to respond and minimize your chances of being hurt?
