While working on the maps for this issue of Friction Zone, I was suddenly overcome with an intense desire to travel. Perhaps the sound of Willie Nelson's song "On the Road Again" playing in the background had something to do with it
I have heard from more than one motorcycle dealer that the current gas prices are responsible for an increase in their business. It seems that people who used to ride are getting back into riding as a way to cope with rising fuel costs. So something that initially looks bad (high gas prices) may turn out to be a good thing for motorcycling, because more riders on the road will hopefully equate to an increase in positive visibility (so to speak) among other drivers. Instead of viewing motorcyclists as people with a 'death wish,' perhaps other drivers will finally see the light and begin to realize that riding a motorcycle isn't so 'crazy' after all. Of course, this could all go south in a hurry if those who are returning to riding don't take some type of refresher training to get rid of any bad habits they may have
Spring has sprung, as evidenced by the poppies that are shooting up all over southern California hills and mountains. Trees are in bloom and almost everywhere I look I see greenery covering the land. This is a beautiful time to ride because the weather is still cool (yet not too cold) and the scenery actually has some color in it instead of being a dry-looking brown. It's also a beautiful time to be thankful for what I still havethe ability to ride
Just a few years ago I was into endurance riding, namely riding 1,000 miles in 24 hours. Once I managed to succeed at that without killing myself, I felt like I was ready to enter another phase in my riding life. My current riding turn-on is cross-country trips. I have already made one round trip, with the west-to-east trip taking only three days and the return trip taking 12 days. This summer I want to take my time throughout the entire trip; so, tell me where to go Click here to submit your ideas.
During the motorcycle show at San Mateo, a reader asked if I had really ridden for 12 days from the east coast to the west coast all by myself. When I answered yes, he asked if it wouldn't have been safer for me to have traveled with someone else. Good question
