So Many Roads…

I just read about your wish list of rides (From the Editor, April 2010). The Alcan Highway is now called the Alaska Highway (check out this or this). You're right—it is all paved except where they are doing construction/repair of the highway. It is approximately 1,400 miles from Dawson Creek, Canada to Delta Junction, Alaska, and it is wild and beautiful. I did it in July 2008 with a buddy. We went north from Delta Junction to Fairbanks and then to the Arctic Circle. He was on a Suzuki V-Strom and I rode my Ducati Multistrada. Any bike can make it, but it was nice to have the suspension travel of an adventure bike (they are not true dualsports). Canada and Alaska are truly spectacular. Nothing in the lower 48 can compare. I highly recommend the trip.

I also rode Deals Gap and the Cherohala Skyway last September. Both are great fun. If you have the time, you should also ride Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway, then go through the Smokey Mountain National Park to Foothills Parkway, which will take you to Deals Gap, then south to Cherohala Skyway. From the start of Skyline Drive to the end of the Cherohala Skyway is 700 miles of twisty, two-lane road. Again, spectacular, but what they call mountains back east really wouldn't make a good foothill out here in the west.
